August 26, 1853 A CAPTAIN DROWNED West Briton
Friday 26th August, 1853 A CAPTAIN DROWNED. The smack "Victoria," of Newquay,
sailed from Swansea on the 15th instant., bound to Newquay, and when near Lundy
Island while engaged in reefing the mainsail, the master, John OSBORNE, was carried
overboard by the boom, and before the boat could be got out he was unfortunately
drowned, although every assistance was rendered by the crew, which consisted of
his three sons, the eldest being about eighteen years of age. They succeeded in
bringing the vessel to Newquay in safety on Saturday last. The captain has left
a wife and six children unprovided for. ~o~o~o~o~ West
